Practical shooting (IPSC) is accuracy, power and speed against the clock. Skill here does not appear out of nowhere — it is built through repetition: stance, grip, transitions between targets, reloads, entering and leaving a position, shooting on the move. And this is exactly where an electronic acoustic target stops being “a way to count points” and becomes a genuine training tool.
The main thing: you get far more repetitions
The motto of practical shooting is accuracy, power, speed (DILIGENTIA — VIS — CELERITAS), and the result is always judged by time plus accuracy together. To turn that into a skill you need volume: quality repetitions with feedback. Run the drill — see the result — correct — repeat.
On an ordinary training day that loop breaks at the worst possible point. After every string you have to walk down to the targets, inspect the holes, patch them and walk back. At rifle distances that is dozens of metres each way, after every single run. The result: only a handful of real repetitions per session, with half the time spent walking.
An acoustic target shows the result the moment the shot lands — straight to your phone. No walking, no patching. You stay on the line and go straight into the next run, and the next, and the next. You get several times more repetitions in the same session — and repetition with feedback is the shortest road to mastery.
An error of 3–5 mm makes no difference in training
It is worth being clear about priorities here. In training you are polishing technique: stance, transitions, pace, working on the move. You do not need match-official precision down to the millimetre — you need to know quickly and objectively whether you hit, which zone, and whether you made the time. For that, a few millimetres of error mean precisely nothing.
Millimetres get measured at the match, where range officers walk the targets and score every hole. Your job in training is to arrive at that match with the skill already built — and it is built on volume of repetition with instant feedback.
What it actually helps you drill
An acoustic target reports a coordinate, a zone, a miss and the time for every shot — exactly the data rifle work is built on:
- Transitions between targets. You see where each shot landed across several targets and how long the transition took, so a sloppy or slow transition shows up immediately.
- Pace of a string. The time on each shot shows where you are rushing and losing accuracy, and where you could push harder at no cost.
- Entering a position and moving between positions. After an entry or a body transition the result appears instantly — you can run the drill dozens of times in one session.
- Shooting from awkward positions and off either shoulder. You see straight away how far the point of impact drifts, and how many runs it takes to stabilise it.
- Reviewing a string. MPI and group size are calculated automatically, so progress from session to session is visible.
Which IPSC disciplines it works for
Here honesty is required. Acoustics only register a supersonic bullet (from 400 m/s at the target) and only on an open range. That fits rifle shooting perfectly, but it does not suit pistol-calibre ammunition or indoor ranges:

Rifle distances are ideal for acoustics
Rifle stages could almost have been designed for acoustic registration. Paper targets usually stand at around 50–150 m; steel poppers and plates at 50, 100, 200 and out to 300 m (safety rules keep steel no closer than 50 m). At every one of those distances a rifle bullet is comfortably supersonic and the range is open — perfect conditions for acoustics. Which model to take for practical shooting
In intensive training everyone throws the occasional shot wide — especially while building speed and dynamic work. So choosing a model largely comes down to one question: how much do you want to stop thinking about a stray round hitting the equipment?
